Uber Teen Accounts Launches in South Africa: Teenagers can Now Hail their Own Rides.

With Uber Teen Accounts launched in South Africa, South African teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 can use the ride-hailing app. The company allows the creation of teenage accounts with the help of a parent or legal guardian.

Additionally, Uber included safety features like live trip tracking, minimum driver ratings, and spending limits.

Uber has previously rolled out the offer in various US states since last year. However, it officially rolled it out across the state of California last month.

Uber Teen Accounts Launched In South Africa

At the launch in Johannesburg, Kagiso Khaole, GM of Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, said the new feature forms part of Uber’s safety services. He emphasized that these services are aimed at helping parents feel more at ease and in control when their teenagers need a ride.

Khaole asserted that “Uber Teen accounts are built with transparency in mind so that there are no surprises for parents, teens, or drivers,”

Additionally, he said, “We’re thrilled to offer this innovative feature to families in South Africa. It includes key safety features built into the heart of the experience. Whether their teen is getting a ride to an internship or heading home after football practice, parents will receive real-time notifications and can follow along with live trip-tracking every step of the way. We’re committed to helping keep teens safe and getting families moving.”

Uber Describes How It Works

Uber says the first step is for a parent or guardian to invite their teen to create an account by sending a link to their phone.
The teen then receives a link to download the Uber app. Thus, create their new teen account, and complete the mandatory safety onboarding process.
After that, teens can start requesting trips on their own, with the parents having the ability to monitor the activities taking place on the teen account.

Ordering Rides: Your teen children can hail rides directly through the app, ensuring a reliable way to get around.
Seasoned Drivers: Every ride is allotted to a highly-rated and experienced driver who has aced Uber’s background checks. Annual rescreening ensures continued safety.
Tracking with Destination Lock: Parents can track their teen’s location throughout the ride and receive real-time updates. For added security, the destination cannot be changed by the driver, only by the teen.
